Kalimpong

Description

Kalimpong is located just 80 kms from the Bagdogra airport and NJP railway station – at altitude of average 1250 mtrs.It is a hill station of Mahabharata range. The town (area of 3.5 miles) is the head quarters of Kalimpong sub dividion. The Indian army’s 27th mountain division is situated on the outside of the town.

How to Reach

Nearest railway station is NJP & Siliguri and nearest airport is Bagdogra. From New Delhi to Bagdogra it takes 2 hrs. and From Kolkata it takes 50 mts. From Bagdogra come Kalimpong by 3 hrs. driving. Regular bus services and hired vehicles connect Kalimpong with Siliguri, NJP, Kurseong, Darjeeling and Gangtok. The journey to Kalimpong from Darjeeling is a beautiful experience with lush green forests and tea gardens. Lover’s View is a romantic view point from where the confluence of river Teesta and Rangeet can be seen. River Teesta gives company to you at the road of Siliguri to Kalimpong.

Places to Visit

  • Graham’s Home School:

Dr. Graham:s Home was founded in 1900 by Dr. John Anderson Graham, a Scottish missionary. It is located on the lower slopes of ‘Delo Hill’. This unique educational institution was established to educate the children of tea estate workers. It was started with only six orphans and now this number is more than 1300. It has also farmhouse, bakery, dairy, poultry, hospital, museum and clothing department in the area of 500 acres.This institution is partially supported by charitable collections and sponsors from all across the world. Every year in the month of May the school organizes “May fair”. A day’s visit there can be enthralling.

  • Pineview Cactus Nursery:

It is a good place to visit to gaze at photographable cactus collection is few rooms.

  • Gauripur House:

Gauripur House is situated about 2 km from the town on the way to Durpindara. Poet Rabindra Nath Tagore stayed here on his many visits to Kalimpong.

  • Tharpa Choling Monastery:

This monastery is situated at Tirpai hill. It contains status of the past, present & future Buddhas. A Garuda protects each Buddha from above.

  • Deolo:

Deolo is a small and peaceful Himalayan hamlet in Darjeeling district of West Bengal. It is the highest point is Kalimpong and situated at only 6 km away from the town.It is a true walk in clouds. In Kalimpong, it is the only place where you get a 360 degree view of the mountains and rivers in the valley.

  • Science Centre:

The Kalimpong Science Centre is established under the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council in 2008 A.C. on Deolo Hill. It is a recent tourist attraction. This science centre provides scientific awareness among the students of the town and the locals.
